Electrochemical Formation of Nd-Fe Alloys in Molten LiF-CaF2-NdF3

In the present study, as a fundamental study for recycling Nd from Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet scrap, electrochemical Nd-alloying behavior of Fe was investigated in molten LiF-CaF 2 -NdF 3 (0.3 or 0.5 mol%) system at 1123 K. Herein, equilibrium potential 3+ /Nd determined 0.18 V (vs Li + /Li) by open-circuit potentiometry using Mo electrode. Cyclic voltammetry and were conducted an electrode, results suggested formation multiple phases within Nd-Fe alloys. Alloy samples prepared via one- two-step potentiostatic electrolysis electrodes various potentials. The liquid alloy confirmed through one-step 0.10 V. solid 17 formed electrolysis, wherein changed to 0.25 after initial V, indicating that phase is thermodynamically stable potentials coexistence states liq. 0.19 0.31 respectively, which are good agreement with previously reported thermodynamic data.
